Instructions

Installing the Adobe Acrobat Reader

After the download is complete:

  1. Double-click the newly downloaded file.
  2. Follow the instructions on your screen.

If there is a failure at any point during the installation of Acrobat Reader, the installer performs a complete uninstall. For this reason, it is important not to close the installer application by clicking its close box in the upper right corner of the background window after clicking the "Thank You" dialog box that appears at the end of the installation. If you wait for a second or two, the installer will automatically close the background windows after the installation is complete.

Issue
When you try to open a PDF file within the Internet Explorer browser window, the Adobe Acrobat viewer (i.e., Acrobat Reader) returns the error, "Internal error has occurred." and the PDF file does not open.

Detail
The hard drive containing your Temp directory has a large amount (e.g., more than 1 GB) of free space.

Solutions
Do one or more of the following:

  1. Use Acrobat Reader 3.01 or Exchange 3.01, which you can order from Adobe Customer Services (800-833-6687)
  2. Set up the Acrobat viewer as a helper application. For instructions, see document 315029.
  3. Download the PDF file to your hard drive and then view it:
    1. Right-click the link to the PDF file, then choose Save Link As from the pop-up menu.
    2. Specify a location on your hard drive, then click Save.
    3. Open the PDF file in an Acrobat viewer.
  4. Change your Temp directory to a drive with less free space (e.g., less than 1 GB). For instructions, consult your Windows documentation.
  5. Open the PDF from Netscape Navigator, rather than in Internet Explorer.

Additional Information
When you open a PDF from the Internet Explorer window, the Acrobat 3.0 viewers try to access the Temp directory. When the Temp directory is on a hard drive with a large amount of free space, the viewer can't access it and returns the error, "Internal error has occurred." The Acrobat 3.01 viewers are able to access the Temp directory when it's on a hard drive with a large amount of free space.
